Herring, Jan
(1923 – 2000)

Place of Birth: Havre, Montana

History: “The oil paintings and watercolors of Jan Herring are a celebration of Nature. As a mature professional teacher and artist, she brings to her oeuvre, masterful techniques, sound composition, and a pallet as vibrant as the flowers in her garden. Her themes are disarming in their simplicity and universality, but never sentimental or boring. The family, motherhood, childhood, memory, nostalgia, and the ever present beauty of Nature are echoed and revealed in ever changing perspectives that constitute this artist’s world.

A protégé of the great Frederic Taubes, Jan has learned well the lessons of a master, but more importantly, she has used her knowledge and talent as a foundation for the evolution and invention of her own unique style. There is, in her abundant and happy life, a metaphor for her creativity, artistic accomplishments, and vision.”
