Place of Birth: Clarksburg, West Virginia History: Carl Cogar was born in Clarksburg West Virginia. As a youth, he studied art for ten years with James Edward Davis. He later studied privately with June Stamm, Robert Blair, Georges Lannaux (France) and Otto Helmer (Luxemberg). Cogar came to El Paso with the army and stayed. He taught painting and printmaking classes in El Paso and later in Las Cruces and Deming, New Mexico creating a triangular travel schedule. He was a founding member of the El Paso Artists Association, an honorary member of the San Diego Art Association and a member of the Rio Bravo Watercolorists. Mr. Cogar was on the committee for the first Sun Carnival Exhibition. This was a regional exhibition that grew to be national. He was president of the El Paso Art Association in 1953 and 1954. He not only exhibited in the El Paso-Southern New Mexico area but also in Louisiana, Virginia, Oregon and Florida. His paintings are in the collections of the El Paso Public Library, West Virginia University, and the Montgomery, Alabama Art Museum. |
